Research

Understand the research behind disability care. Find clinical trials your family could join, read plain-language summaries of new research findings, and connect with the institutes and universities producing the evidence.

Clinical trials and research studies test new treatments, therapies, and care approaches with real people — including children. Joining a study is always voluntary, and families sometimes choose it to access promising care, contribute to knowledge, or help others with the same condition. The resources below are the official, verified places to search for studies and learn about participant protections.

ClinicalTrials.gov

The U.S. National Library of Medicine registry of publicly and privately funded clinical studies. Search by condition, then use the "Age" filter and choose "Child (birth-17)" to find studies enrolling children near you. This is the single best starting point for finding a trial.

NIH — Clinical Research Trials and You

The National Institutes of Health plain-language guide to what clinical trials are, how participation works, what volunteers should ask, and what protections exist for participants.

NIH — For Parents and Children

Resources for parents considering enrolling a child in a clinical study, including how permission and assent work and what questions to ask the study team.

FDA — Clinical Trial Participation

The Food and Drug Administration overview of how trials are designed, reviewed, and monitored, how experimental treatments are evaluated for safety and effectiveness, and what participants should consider.

HHS Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP)

The federal office that oversees rules protecting research volunteers, including informed consent and institutional review boards (IRBs). Its "About Research Participation" pages explain your rights as a participant in plain language.

Rare Diseases Clinical Research Network (RDCRN)

An NIH-funded network of research consortia studying 280+ rare diseases at clinical centers nationwide. Includes a free contact registry that tells you about studies for your condition, plus plain-language research summaries each month.

NIH ResearchMatch

A free, secure volunteer registry funded by the NIH that matches people willing to participate in research with studies looking for volunteers at hundreds of medical centers across the country.

NICHD — Clinical Research

The NIH institute behind much of the research on developmental disabilities, early intervention, and rehabilitation for children and youth. Lists NICHD clinical studies and explains how their research works.
